So I am sitting here writing a LOR for myself, from the chairman of my dept. WHen I am done, I will send it to him for editing.

Well, there are five of us from the dept. applying for the twelve or so positions university-wide. He is having each of us write our own LOR's.

It occurs to me that when the committee sees that each of them is written in a completely different voice and style, they will probably question the validity of all of them.

Oh well.

You mean people actually read those things?

there are two ways in which they matter:

1) if they are not glowing, that is a red flag

2) is there any language that allows the committee to "read between the lines" on which candidates he most prefers.
