Default Carpet thoughts?

Does anyone have any recommendations for new carpet? Is nylon or polyester better? What sorts of things should we look for in a carpet? TIA.

I have a friend who owns his own carpet/flooring store. I'll ask him his thoughts and get back to you.

Personally, I prefer hardwood floors with rugs. A lot easier for maintenance, IMO, as spills are much easier to clean.

Carpet sucks. I'd go for wood floors.

I agree with Il Pad and Marsup. Go with wood or a good laminate.

If you're set on carpet, Consumer Reports has a nice overview here.

Wood floors last way longer too. We rented a house in Memphis that was about 40 years old that still had the original wood floors inside and they still looked nice. I can't even imagine living in a 40-year-old house with original carpet. YUCK!

Carpet is great, just don't allow shoes in the house. It's soft, comfortable, and warm.

We just put in new flooring this last winter. The upstairs is all carpeted with nylon frieze and the downstairs is a mix of hardwood and carpet. I think the nylon is pretty easy to clean, at least my wife hasn't detected any of my hastily cleaned Coca-Cola spills.

Go with a nylon carpet. Polyester can sometimes be had for cheaper but it does not wear well at all. It's a nice soft fiber but in high traffic areas it can get matted and doesn't have the resiliency of nylon. Wool is super nice but expensive. There are nylon/wool blends.

It's a matter of preference really. I don't like berber or any looped pile style carpets. I prefer something with a lot of twists like saxony or a frieze style carpet. Padding is important too. Make sure the tufts are tight, dense. Also if you're carpeting a whole house or multiple rooms with the same carpet make sure you try and get the carpet all from the same roll. Even if it's from the same dye lot, color can vary from roll to roll.

I prefer hardwood to carpet also but you'll spend 2-3 times as much easily.

Thanks for the input. I should have thought to ask for reference help from the librqrian to start with, eh?

The carpet is not for our whole house. Just certain rooms. We have hardwood/laminate in other places. So I appreciate everyone's thoughts on flooring alternatives, but that call was made a long time ago. ALso, we do not have shoes on in the house. It's a rule with my wife.

Wool is probably too expensive and not sufficiently stain proof. Nylon is being pushed by the places we have looked, but they have some nice polyester that looks good and feels good and even appears to be more highly rated while being cheaper. I was hoping to get some insight into this choice. It sounds like 'branded' nylon is the way to go.

Thanks again and if anyone else has thoughts, please post!
