Default Who was the first "crossover" band?

I'm not sure about this..but, I'm trying to think of bands that crossed over to other genres of music.

As I'm listening right now to the Eagles...there early stuff was bonifide country.

Was the Eagles the first real crossover band? Can you think of anyone else? Shania is our current version of probabaly the most successful crossover artist...but, think back, I can't think of anyone before the Eagles time.

Cross over from what to what? depending on how you define it there were many, such as Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc.

Well, I guess from one major genre to another.

Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis etc. was a bit before my time, so I'm not sure how he was received by other classification of music. Who did they appeal to at the same time?

Which ones did they cross over to (at the same time). Johnny Cash, if I remember correctly, was kinda rockish at first, but then, obviously became country later on.

I'm kinda talking about hitting to genres at the same time.

I guess it depends on what you define as crossover appeal. You're defining it as artists who have had success in two genres. Whereas I was looking at appeal as someone who transcended their genre and appealed to other listeners outside of their genre.

I nominate Marty Robbins. El Paso was the first Western cross-over #1 hit and I believe it is still the longest (in terms of running time) song every to make it to #1 on Billboard.

Although now that I think* of it, Patsy Cline was two years ahead of Marty on the charts.

*By "think of it" I mean google it.
