Here in the states we call it having an affair. Interesting that Shiites consider these marriages to be allowed under islamic law while Sunnis consider it to be a form of prostitution. There are some hilarious quotes under the 'a cover for prostitution' heading about halfway down.

actually "affair" would not be correct. This would more appropriately be called a "mistress". I get the impression that mistresses are more common in Europe than America.

Having a mistress is closer to polygamy that having an affair, although they are similar in many respects.

Actually, in certain economic classes, mistresses are quite common here. I would speculate that many of your colleagues have mistresses.

Well the wife knowing about it is probably not as common. Most try to keep it discreet here.

In case you're wondering, it costs about 50,000 to 200,000 (per year) to carry a mistress. A little pricey if you ask me, because the divorce costs much, much more.
