Default LDS Books - Pet Peeve

I was looking through a rack of LDS books yesterday and every single book has a bio on the back or on the sleeve where it lists the following:

The name of the author's spouse
How many kids/grandkids the author has
What major church callings the author has held

Does that bug anyone else? The church calling list always kills me. Are we so insecure that we can only read LDS books if the author has punched his/her ticket with the appropriate list of church callings? As an author, do any of these folks have any qualms about using a list of calling to promote a product? Apparently not.

See, that was your problem right there. Not that you have identified it, you can work on not repeating it.

I never thought of them listing those as a means or form of promotion.

I kind of agree. But I think more than anything they're just trying to say they're a member in good standing. You don't want a book on LDS doctrine that was written by Joe McPherson, Chiropracter, exed in 1995 for Sunday evening basement meetings on the meaning of the parable of wheat and tares.

I had classes from Stephen Robinson at BYU before he got big (big in the fame arena). He used to love to crack on the Deseret Book Bestsellers list and call it priestcraft. I always wondered how he would later reconcile his bestsellers list standing for several years running.

By the way, what is he doing now? I'm madly curious. I've been thinking about calling him up to see.

I have noticed it too. It's all about establishing ethos. Someday, if it makes it past the editor, I'll have "Is known to fall asleep in Elder's Quorum" in my bio.

My all-time favorite bio was on some study aid / reference book that I saw at Ensign books, obviously written by his father. The author was in his early 20's and the bio went off about what a special guy he is and always understood gospel principles so well.
