Default Memoirs of a Geisha

My wife talked me into renting Memoirs of a Geisha. I see my wife in part as this alpha-person who's the smartest lawyer I've ever known and one of our biggest rain makers. But when I ask her, "Why not Ran or the Godfather or Apocalypse Now or Gladiator?", she says, "John, I'm a woman, I like chick flicks."

Here's how boring Memoirs of a Geisha was (despite the gorgeous cinematogrpahy). Half way through it our ten month old woke up and we heard her cries from upstairs and I jumped up eagerly to go try to get her back to sleep (I've been known to pretend I don't hear her, I'll confess). My wife offered to pause the movie. "No," I said, "You go ahead and watch it, this could take a while." She was enthralled so she was grateful. I stalled getting the kid to sleep.

I actually quite enjoyed the movie. Not top ten material, but I'd say it was solid, and some aspects very good.

Really no desire to see it. Also, I was bugged that they cast Chinese actresses for the main parts. I guess I'm a purist.

Religion rises inevitably from our apprehension of our own death. To give meaning to meaninglessness is the endless quest of all religion. When death becomes the center of our consciousness, then religion authentically begins. Of all religions that I know, the one that most vehemently and persuasively defies and denies the reality of death is the original Mormonism of the Prophet, Seer and Revelator, Joseph Smith.

Funny story.

I have not seen the movie. I hear it was a disapointment. That's too bad because the book was excellent.

I'd rather poke myself in the eye with the opposite end of a hot fork than endure that torture of a boring movie.

Rocky, if you're going to do it, do it right:

Use a carpenter's awl to stab yourself in the ears and melon ballers to remove your eyes.
