Default how to silence a mullah

The bishop of the other ward was out here at summer camp. He's a straight-laced conservative guy by all accounts. Nothing wrong with that.

Anyway, he gets going on various issues like the marriage amendment and some other things. The group of us gets to talking about BYU, and how to get kids in our stake into college, missions, etc.

I bring up, "good thing for the many hispanics that they have an advantage in getting into BYU."

"Yes," he says, "but I think it is for financial aid."

"No, not just financial aid. BYU has an affirmative action program, they are trying to increase the number of minorities."

I could see him silently just chewing, massaging, grating against it.

He hates affirmative action. But he hates people who snipe at BYU or the church. (an exaggeration, but illustrative of the process).

He's a good man, and I use the word "mullah" in this case in jest. I only illustrate how all of us must confront things that are not perfectly the way we would have them.

Do you define those who hate Affirmative Action as mullahs?

If so, count me in.

AA is racism, pure and simple. If you support that, more power to you, I guess.

But you're racist.

the point being when the church adopts a non-conservative policy, then mullahs have a hard time processing that.

Lingo, are you saying that the church has instituted racist policies?

I disagree with Affirmative Action, yes.

If you're trying to draw parallels between this and the SSM issue, I don't see it.

And you can bet I won't be on here every single day bitching about how dumb the Prophet is for allowing AA at BYU.

You don't see a parallel? The church adopts a policy, you disagree with the policy.

By the way, what has the prophet said about swearing?

:P

(And yes, I am just trying to be annoying)

Although not a fan of AA, I can see wisdom in doing it for BYU. We have a significant minority population that needs leadership skills, training and education.

If you compare the skills of gringos in the US against latinos in South America, most will not be as well prepared to enter college. But we must educate them to get them into a better economic class.

I'm not a fan for government AA, but for BYU it makes sense. We need to promote our members as best we can.
