Default The "LDS young adults" don't commit suicide study

http://aje.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/reprint/155/5/413

Quote:
Adequate church attendance and advancement in the priesthood
are determined on an individual basis through an interview
between the person and the ecclesiastic leader of the
congregation. Therefore, persons with depression or any
other health condition who are faithful and obedient to
church doctrines but who are unable to attend church regularly
due to their illness would still advance in the priesthood.
This seems very far-fetched to me that they could make this blanket statement. Amazingly far-fetched.

Well on a side note, that quote gives reason why some less-actives and inactives are ordained to the office of high priest.

Also the authors classify you as inactive if you are 20 and aren't an elder.

Is it any more comforting to LDS that their neighbors and inactive members have a sky-high suicide rate, assuming the study is correct?

I mean, does living with a bunch of active LDS make some people want to commit suicide?

Sociology/psychology studies have by default questionable value. The "value" they have is for those who want their own personal biases/gut instincts validated by any study that happens to agree with their position.

Talk about someone being high up on a horse.

You evidence little understanding of either field.

This is one of the more foolish and indefensible assertions you have made.

And that is saying something.

I haven't had time to read through the whole study. I may at some point.

It is in a respectable journal.

Yeah, I was appealing to sociological/psychological studies to refute Goatnapper's contention that bad coaching causes more injuries.

I have an extensive educational background in experimental design. Sociology is the poster child for case studies of poor experimental design and statistical analysis.

Let's just start with the dangers of qualitative analysis and ex post facto segregation of the data.

Your conclusion about soft sciences and this statement are lightyears apart. ON one hand, you are correct in that social sciences can suffer from poor experimental design given the fuzzy subjects they are trying to study. It's quite another thing to make the leap you made.
