Community Interests vs Personal Freedom
Interesting article on the healthcare debate: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24670562/
In a nutshell, the Dem proposals involve sharing risk across broad pools, including both the healthy & less healthy. As participants who invest more than they receive, the healthy subsidize the sick. McCain's proposal emphasizes personal freedom, as individuals would seek coverage on their own & be able to choose from competing insurance offerings. Insurance companies would see less regulation, which (presumably) would lead to better insurance "products". Based on pre-existing conditions and/or factors identifed in pre-coverage exams, those who are less healthy would see their premiums skyrocket as the insurance companies mitigate their financial risk. Community Shared Values vs Personal Freedom, the classic dichotomy between left & right. Other examples - car insurance, public education (I tried to be fair, honest) |

I believe that pretty much sums it up. Well stated.

No kidding. I love some of the euphemisms of the left. "It takes a village", "shared society", "Community shared values", etc. Sounds less harsh than socialism, statism, or collectivism.

Use populist labels for terms of oppression. Brilliant advertising but fraud nonetheless.

I have to laugh at the reflexive condemnation. "It takes a village" - what is it when 2 sets of parents agree to look out for each others' kids? What is the real agenda with church youth groups (GASP - parents not intimately involved with ALL the specifics of every minute they spend with a youth group leader?) Communism, I tell ya, Stalinism "Shared Community Values" - parents uniting to keep porn away from kids? An insurgency is just around the corner, private property is at risk. So how do the rightest, most freedom loving liberatarians manage the interaction of their children with other adults who can supplement and validate parental efforts? In libertarian and maximal individualist form, is it really all about drawing up legal contracts? Take a deep breath and acknowledge there is such as thing as a community (ie, a church), that decent & common sense values & interests are important... unless, of course, you're a survivalist with a large cache of weapons & ammo, and believe that society is bent on corrupting your children. If this is the case, disregard my post as I don't wish to disturb you. |

Group effort is a good thing, in many instances. Who is going to help the wandering mentally ill homeless? Who is going to see that kids from broken poor families get an education? How is the kid from the dirt-poor family going to go on a mission?

Ma'ake, have you read Robert Putnam's Bowling Alone?
It should be to your liking.

Voluntary versus compulsion. In most instances, the socialist and the communist believe in compulsory charity. If my ward wants to take voluntary contributions to help out unfortunate to ensure they serve missions, which we do, that's the element of volition, but the community effort folks don't stop there, they want to compel community efforts.
