Default I always love a great speech

I always love a great speech, but the problem is they are almost unheard of. Yesterday I happened to turn on NPR as I started a 45 minute drive, at the beginning of our local NPR station's rebroadcast of Senator Robert Byrd's final speech on the Iraq War Resolution. I'd never heard it. What a great speech! I'm talking "I Have a Dream" great. I daresay the speech will be his legacy (he has had a lot of bad history to overcome, like being a onetime member of the clan and a filibuster of the 1964 Civil Rights act).

I heard most of it over about 45 minutes. Say what you want about fundies, but they have more than their share of great orators. Byrd's speech was staggering in its range, feeling, eloquence and prescience. His primary thesis was that the Senate has disgraced itself by abdicating to the president its Constitutional right and power to declare war. He quoted and alluded to the Constitution, the Federalist Papers, the Gospel of Luke, Parliament's war against Charles I in the Sixteenth Century (cackling as he noted Charles also called himself "Commander in Chief" and wound up losing his head for it), Greek philosphers, and much much more. Anyway, I strongly recommend you listen to the speech for sheer entertainment value if nothing else even if you totally disagree with him. I think it's a tour de force, and speaks much wisdom. Here is the link to it on our local NPR web page.

The speech was given in early 2003 (February or March) and has proven prophetic. He was 85 at the time. Whoever wins the democratic nomination should use this thing somehow.

You may dig this link to a podcast dedicated to this very topic. It is pretty cool. I came across it when my nephew was doing a book report on Abraham Lincoln.

The only problem is that it is not updated often enough. It claims once a week, but it is not that often.

All you need is an mp3 player to listen.
