Do you think the DesNews brass would allow him to keep his job after writing something like that, if he worked for them? |

Nice article. I have to say that I identify with it. I learned a rather one-sided version of church history while growing up. When I found out that it was less than the whole truth, I felt a little deceived. A lot of weird shit went down in the early days, but I find it easier to excuse that stuff than it is to excuse teaching half-truths in church nowadays.

I agree with this. It is my belief that by the time my generation reaches power in the church (not for another 40-50 years) that we will have embraced more of our history and some of the uncertainty (and therefore the need for faith) that accompanies it. I think that that by then the "Lying for the Lord" train of thought, though well intended, will have gone the way of much else that had its hayday and is now on the trash heap.

How would it be offensive to the Deseret News?

I'm assuming the LDS Church still owns the DesNews. Maybe they don't. I was only wondering if Kirby could get away with something like that if he was writing for the DesNews (if it's LDS owned).

It's owned by the LDS Church. But I don't see how it would be offensive to the Deseret News if Kirby wrote for the News and did that column.

Sorry, I should have said LDS Church leadership. Did you really not see that connection? Or are you saying the LDS Church would have no problem with that column?
