Default In the name of thy son ...

One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone is speaking in church or bearing their testimony and closes "in the name of THY son". He's not MY son. You're speaking to US, not praying.

Drives me nuts.

I too hate it when they conclude a testimony with "In the name of thy son."

You're not addressing God... You're addressing the congregation...

For me it pretty much negates everything they've said befor that. They're obviously not even thinking about what they're saying.

Vain repetitions ...

Easy... You weren't paying attention in the first place. That's how I solve most of my annoying church problems.

I think it's annoying too, but I don't think it negates what they said or is a vain repetition. We all pray much more than we bear our testimonies, so it's natural that we would confuse two similar things.

Doesn't bother me at all. It's usually the sign of someone who prays a lot and doesn't speak in church much. That's a beautiful kind of person.

People speaking in church can be nervous and prone to mispeaking. Have a little charity toward your brethren.

Our stake president assigned our High Counselors to speak on this very subject. I found it particularly intriguing, as, in our ward, one of the counselors in the bishopric has a bad habit of misusing "thy" when he ends his testimony and talks.

The High Counselor broke it down very plainly, explaining how "thy" means "your" and how, if you're addressing the audience, then saying "your Son" isn't correct.

Later that same day, the Bishpric Counselor gave the lesson for the Young Men, and ended it in the name of "thy Son".

Ya'll must have sharper ears than I do, because I have rarely heard anyone do this. Although I have heard enough bitching about it, that the pointing out of this triviality has become a pet peeve of mine.

(Notice how I made myself superior and pulled a holier than thou in two sentences? I have been studying the Indy/Lingo playbook).
