Default Revisiting Nauvoo

I gave my Nauvoo talk yesterday, here are a few highlights I learned:

It took the saints 5 years to build the temple and they only occupied it for about 3 months.

In the time they occupied it, nearly 6,000 saints received their endowments.

The men were asked to work 1 day in 10 on the temple. Joseph Smith called this their tithing.

The women were asked to provide food and clothing and other things. This organized effort was called the Relief Society.

The temple was architecturally ahead of its time and referred to as the Jewel of the Mississippi.

The concept of baptizms for the dead was introduced to the saints (D.C. 124:29) partially because "a font did not exist on the earth to perform these ordinances."

The endowment (eternal marraige & eternal families) given to the saints.

Polygamy introduced.

In 1937, the church repurchased the land for $900

In 1948, two missionaries met a decendent of William Weeks (the original architecht of the temple) and through this chance meeting, the church acquired the original plans to the Nauvoo temple.

It was probably the most interesting & difficult topic I've ever had to speak on, but it was a great exercise for me.

Sounds like you covered a lot of stuff. I'll bet it was really interesting to hear.

Both of the sacrament speakers mentioned it yesterday at church. Then, to top it off, we briefly discussed blacks and the priesthood in YM class. The lesson was on revelation.

We have 8 black YM in our branch.

No, I didn't mention polygamy in my talk, that was just one of the things I learned. Most of the stuff I learned I mention...that was just one I left out.

too bad you didn't say "the new and everlasting covenant of polygamy". that would perk some ears up.

but seriously, it's choices like these that lead to RMs not knowing that Joseph Smith practiced polygamy.

I'm not criticizing you, I'm just making a cultural comment.

Yeah, sometimes I wonder if some of those topics are better handled on an individual basis by eclesiastical leaders that have the knowledge and wherewithal to appropriately address the topics.

Given the way I outlined my talk, Polygamy didn't fit...then again, I'm not sure if it could ever fit in a talk of that nature, but who knows.

I can definitely see your point though.

This is a good way to approach more delicate subjects, IMO. Don't force the talk to include something juicy, but don't shy away from it either, if it's part of the talk/lesson's natural progression. Sounds like you made a good call.

Congrats, maybe someday you could give a talk about Austria in 1914 without mentioning Archduke Ferdinand.
