For me, personally, it was an understanding that he really is an Apostle of Christ.

I can buy that the appropriate message is conveyed by the Spirit to the degree of the receiver's understanding.

I don't recall Alma saying something like that (although I'm not a scriptorian by any stretch of the imagination). Perhaps you would be so kind as to tell us the verses in the Book of Mormon you are referring to?
