Default Curse of the Golden Flower

The latest movie from Yimou Zhang, director of Hero and House of Flying Daggers.

In my opinion this movie was far inferior to those two movies. From the previews you get the impression that there is a lot of action and fighting. Sadly what you see in the previews IS all the fighting in the movie.

The beginning is especially boring as they set up the ploddingly predictable royal intrigues.

This movie doesn't know what it wants to be. It fails as an action movie (Hero). It fails at being a intrigue-filled thriller (Elizabeth). And it fails as a Greek/Shakespearean tragedy (Ran, King Lear).

It may be worth catching for big fans of the genre, but don't expect anything that is amazing or breathtaking.

Bummer. I loved Hero and House of Flying Daggers, and was looking forward to see this. But then, the fighting and action scenes weren't the highlight for me for those first two movies.

This story is much less compelling in my opinion.

The set design is spectacular. But not enough to carry the movie.

Would a talking donkey with a black belt in karate have helped it?
