In Chile, the Church's weddings aren't recognized by the state/country. So You have to get married civilly first, and then you can get sealed in the temple. I believe there is about a 10 day grace period where you can get sealed after a civil wedding, though I'm not sure what the exact number is.
I would imagine the council is there to prevent things from happening like "Well, let's just get married civilly and try it out... if we don't last then no harm, no foul we can get divorced and not worry about the temple." Or the famous "trip to Vegas weddings to have sex" followed by a quick annullment. |
