The south Alabama shootings should be a wake-up call to all of those who rail about removing the AK-47s and other assault weapons from the streets.

Why would the average citizen want or need such a weapon in his/her cache of weapons, especially when there may be small children or teens in the home? Too often these weapons fall into the hands of the criminals and the mentally disturbed, and is a nightmare to those who put their lives on the line every day to protect and serve us.

When is the NRA going to start being a responsible agency? I have no problem with anyone's owning a weapon (not an arsenal) for protection and, as much as I loathe deer hunting, I realize that the hunters want their rifles, etc. But how many rifles does it take to kill a poor deer?

South Alabama is blessed that there weren't more 11 deaths. Now, isn't that a bloody shame -- that we have to face the reality that it could have been so much worse? Tell that to the families who are reeling. Tell that to law enforcement. Tell that to your child. Explain it away however you wish -- the truth remains that assault weapons have no place in our streets and in our homes.
