The policy is that if a formal request for name removal is forwarded to Church HQ (not required to go through BP or SP) prior to the convening of any disciplinary council, the request will be honored. In such cases no disciplinary proceedings occur and the requestor receives a letter confirming name removal within thirty days. Local authorities are notified and those with wisdom will follow-up with personal expressions of love and friendship. The Church adopted this policy as a result of settling litigation. The only exception of which I am aware would involve public and embarassing criminal activity (e.g. MLM).
