You guys don't sing Amazing Grace???? I thought that was required singing everywhere.

Of course, I can't say much...our convocational hymn today was "The Power of Love" by Huey Lewis.

Mormons are kind of scared of the idea of salvation by grace. The worry is that people will think that, since we are saved by grace, we can sin as much as we want to with no effect on our eternal welfare. Most LDS will be able to quote James 2:17, but nothing from the book of Romans at all. The pendulum, however, seems to be swinging back the other direction nowadays, with a much greater emphasis on Christ and his grace.

Hm. I hadn't thought of the hymn in terms of the grace v. works debate. It seems the sufficiency of the one does not preclude the necessity of the other, though you'd never know it from the way many churches approach the topic.

My favorite Amazing Grace moment was when my cousin sang it at her Bat Mitzvah. My brothers and I all laughed at the irony.

Never underestimate the endless possibilities of zeal and over-analysis.
