Academic research
I can't speak for non-medical research, but as far as medical research in the United States, I think we are very near losing a generation of researchers due to the current funding climate.

I think the current value system in America is pretty bankrupt and I'm not surprised by what you say. I heard on NPR the other day that one in four homeless people really are veterans (they don't just lie about it on those little makeshift signs).

You have to be crazy to be a MD and go into research. Half the pay, and no job security year to year.
