ACLU sues on behalf of prospective LDS Missionary

Here's an interesting story about the ACLU in West Virginia suing a state scholarship board on behalf of a prospective LDS missionary. Evidently, the board would not hold his scholarship while he was gone for two years on his mission.

Although I'm not an ACLU member or an active supporter, I generally support the ACLU's activities in serving as a check against government invasion of civil liberties. I think it's good to have a publicly visible check. It's what makes a democracy healthy.

Mormons, especially Utah Mormons, are typically against the ACLU because the only thing we see from them are lawsuits against the majority religion in the state of Utah. Were we in the minority more often, as we apparently are in West Virginia, we would be much more fond of an organization devoted to protecting the rights of citizens that find themselves in the minority because of their race or religion.

I can agree with this and will admit that this is why I have general contempt for the ACLU.

Of course, I also look at the kind of people in the public eye who are proud card-carrying members of the ACLU and have decided that I don't want to be affiliated with them, so that receives my ire as well.
