just bought a sleeping bag
north face down "superlight" for $40 used. Probably 20 years old, but shows very little wear. Major downside is that it smells vaguely of cigarette smoke (he had asked for $50, but I got him to take off $10 for the smell). Gonna wash the baby. But at $40, I can't really complain.
I imagine I will use my REI traveling synthetic bag (rated at 55deg) most of the time. Used it at summer camp. I was actually a little chilly a couple of the nights, even with a cotton sheet inside the bag. (thank goodness for chilly weather during summer camp. it sure beats the alternative). |

Last year I bought a lightweight wool sleeping bag liner, that could actually be used as a bag by itself if need be. Best $10 I spent on camping gear last year. It made a huge difference inside my mummy bag during the last snow campout I went on. Its a bit bulky to lug around if you want to do any backpacking, but for tent camping its great.

I bought a fleece liner for my bag at Wal-Mart for $15 a few years back. I've never felt cold since.

a flannel sheet also works well. I like the feel of flannel better than nylon. but that's just me. I guess I could close my eyes and imagine that it is silk.

washed the sleeping bag in the bathtub. Woollite and vinegar.
Big pain to rinse that thing out. Put it in the dryer, man, I burned through a lot of natural gas.... Still not completely dry. Good news is that most of the cigarette smell is out. Now I just need a good backpacking tent. |
