Skiing
I've only been skiing once. This was about 3 years ago.
But after skiing just once, on the easy slopes, I decided that I would never ski again without a helmet. After a hard wipeout caused by me avoiding an out-of-control snowboarder, I was surprised at how hard I hit my head. http://www.nypost.com/seven/03172009...ead_160027.htm Apparently N. Richardson is brain-dead after a benign fall on an easy slope during ski instruction. My resolve to wear head protection is only stronger now. |

Very weird. I've skiied and snowboarded for 20 years and hit my head pretty hard a few times and (though some may dispute it) been fine. But yeah, sometimes a relatively soft hit in just the wrong spot can do the damage.
I was snowboarding last Friday on the far edge of a groomed run and almost caught my toe edge - I caught myself in time, but if I hadn't I'd have likely slammed my head/face into a tree. That scare combined with this news has convinced me to get a helmet.

I don't ski any longer, but I doubt I'd wear a helmet if I did.
I'll wear one when on a bike, but that's because I consider pavement a lot harder than snow.

My family and I ski a solid 20+ times a year, and there is no way on this earth I'd ski without a helmet or allow my children to ski without a helmet. It's not only about protecting ourselves in a fall but it's about all the other morons who don't know what they are doing. It's a wonder some of them know how to get dressed in the morning.
Last Saturday, my 9 year old tumbled a good 50 yards down a double black diamond chute. He wasn't hurt, but there was no way I would have let him take the run without a helmet.

I don't ski, and I'd never before heard of skiing with a helmet. I certainly have now, though, and I may see about investing in a company that sells ski helmets. I think this story scared the bejeeezus out of a lot of people.
