"secret combinations"
for you scholars, what do we know of the 1800 conception of this (if any). What would JS have relied on (if anything) if he come up with this on his own?
Certainly the concept has large bearing on our world, as there are our entire countries toppled or about to be toppled by organized criminals. I'm curious if this was a concern in Joseph Smith's time. I read an article about one of the prison gangs based in Brazil. The one who led a mass assault against Brazilian police, leading to basically war. Amazing. And a warning to us. |

I suspect that many Mormons thought of the mobs in Missouri/Illinois as being secret combinations of sorts.

as a significant part of the Book of Mormon, the idea would have preceded the Danites, and proceded the persecution that JS faced.

I've never understood what is and is not a secret combination....
I have a classmate who constantly shows me web pages about Skull and Bones, Bohemian Grove, Free Masons, etc... Sometimes I wonder if those are secret combinations... Also... The US has prison gangs. The AB was about as powerful as a gang could be until they got ratted out from within. Fortunately for us, they never initiated a mass assault on the police because there was a sufficient number of police willing to help them in what they did. |

A secret combination, as I understand it, is more than a secret organization. It is secret organization dedicated to gain through evil. Like the mafia. Or even Enron folks who got together and cooked the books.

It's my understanding that anti-Masonry was quite prevalent in New England around that time.

A lot of people still believe that about the Masons.

Check out this article that describes a lawsuit calling a group of oil company CEOs an improper "combination."
