This disturbs in large part because the concept of joint and several liability and the weird Oregon concept of statute of limitations. You have a home teacher who is working as a volunteer without compensation, who allegedly molests somebody. The organization never encouraged him to molest. The activities occurred in the 1980s, and the Church should be punished for conduct and protocols that have been rectified after many years? It looks like a frivolous windfall for attorneys and really won't do anything. The real perpetrator, if there is one, won't pay anything in most cases. Why should old cases be resurrected to be tried under modern standards? That bothers me as a lawyer.

It sounds like greed to me.
