I dated a girl who believed whole-heartedly in this precept. The times I sat through "Camelot" and heard what a tragic love story it was, all the time thinking, "Well, let's see now, if you're married, you shouldn't have sex with someone other than your husband. And if you were really noble of character, you wouldn't sleep with another man's wife. Where's the romance in all this?" Or how many times did I hear one of our good RS sisters gush over "Bridges of Madison County" or "Titanic," wondering, "Did you really watch the movie?" To hell with the men who stood by these women in their day-to-day boring lives (as if men never experience tedium), the guys that really matter are the forbidden ones that ring their bells for a few days and then are gone. Our mistake must have been sticking around after ringing their bells. I will say this, 11, this art form did serve its purpose. There were few things that got my dates in the mood to explore the outer edges of proper chaste behavior better than a good forbidden love flick. Unprincipled as it sounds, I made good use of the genre. That said, Brokeback Mountain would have just left me retching.

Man, an awful lot of middle-of-the-bellcurve thinking on this topic. Props out to Fusnik for taking the outside line (and Non-Sequitir who now seems only capable of saying things I agree with).
Haven't seen the movie, but that many critics aren't usually that wrong, so from a probability standpoint... o

Here's a funny opinion piece by Larry David on the topic.
