I wondered if a warped mind such as mine would be the only one to enjoy it. Knowing you're equally delusional and deluded brings solace to my soul.

To have sex with one female is to have sex with more than one female. You can't dip your toe in the same river twice. While sexuality is a strong theme, and is treated beautifully, involuntary memory is what ties everything together.

So how much time should I allocate to reading this encyclopedic work? A month, a year, a lifetime?

One of the funniest books that I've ever read is called "Three Men in a Boat (to say nothing of the dog)." It's by Jerome K Jerome.

There are so many layers to ISOLT that it is at first impressive, then stunning, then sublime. I found myself going back to reread passages in wonder and delight. It is very funny at times too. I read it over the course of a year. Much of that reading was during the summer between semesters (which is how I think of time), and during winter break. It could be read faster, and I have no doubt that you could read it quickly (quickly for 4,000 pages, that is), but I don't think it's best read quickly. Once you get into it a little ways, you'll know what I mean.

I agree with you here. I love that book.

My brothers read a little bit
Little words like "if" and "it" My father can read big words, too like "Constantinople" and "Timbuktu." I've always thought it interesting that the mom is apparently the only illiterate in the family. Oh, well...I rather prefer Green Eggs and Ham anyway. |
