Fantastic description. I'm stealing it.

No laughter in Sacrament Meeting. LOL! This makes me want to come out of retirement. The church has gone from sad and petty to downright kooky. If I didn't have to get dressed in a white shirt and shave, I might just attend church for some entertainment value.

Reading this thread aloud in Sacrament Meeting might elicit some.

Here's the quote from Joseph Fielding Smith that was displayed on the screen during Elder Oaks's talk. I went back on my DVR.

"Amusement, laughter, lightmindedness, are all out of place in the sacrament meetings of the Latter-day Saints."

He said it and it even got its own text box. How is that a distortion?

"A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a downcast spirit dries up the bones." (Prov. 17:22)

"Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises." (Psalm 98:4)

"Bees were humming, sweet birds singing, music ringing through the grove" (Hymn # 26--sounds like a rainforest to me)

"My brothers and sisters, do you with your acts of favoritism really believe in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ? For if a person with gold rings and in fine clothes comes into your assembly, and if a poor person in dirty clothes also comes in, and if you take notice of the one wearing the fine clothes and say, "Have a seat here, please," while to the one who is poor you say, "Stand there," or, "Sit at my feet," have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?" (James 2:1-4)

What the LDS Church does not need is more grim judgmentalism in sacrament meeting. How many more things can we come up with so puritanical zealots can feel rightly offended? Taking the sacrament with the "wrong" hand? Asking a congregation to read the scriputures along with you? Looking askance at a young man with long hair passing the sacrament? Or noting that a speaker is wearing a blue shirt? A woman with more than one earring in each ear? Should we sneer at children making a joyful noise?

We're going to hell.

That is, if we were any good at following the apostles. We are not.

This "no laughing" injunction will be ignored.

From now on, I'll be making a point to turn to scriptures during sacrament meeting, which is not LDS-illegal.

Being serious here for a minute, but is amusement and laughter really a problem in our Sacrament meetings?

Maybe I need to go to some new wards. I find our meetings to be edifying, but "amusing" or "funny" are hardly adjectives I would use to describe Church meetings.

I didn't see the talk. Was it literally a proscription against anyone cracking a joke? Tex's Catholic post seemed to say that Oaks was referring more to our attitude during the Sacrament ordinance....which is reasonable...however, is laughter and amusement really a problem during the passing of the Sacrament?

Oh, well. I guess I will do what ever good Elder should do.....grab the Conference Ensign and read the talk for myself 5 minutes before my next home teaching appointment.

after my last talk, a sister in the ward remarked to Farrah, "I didn't know your husband was so funny."

I do a self-effacing understated what-am-I-doing-here shtick. It seems to keep people awake.

This may have been a back-handed compliment....sort of like saying "I was pleasantly surprised by Palin in the VP debate...."
