Ask the local bike shop, which will be servicing your bike what to buy.
Don't buy it necessarily, but find out what they recommend. You will want speed, comfort and durability. Don't short change speed.

Nothing wrong with motobecane bikes. Mike, you look at the hybrids and tell me you think those wheels are a good idea. I actually like the looks fo the Mtbs for the price, although you will not want to have such aggressive knobby tread for the road (and btw the smooth tires are called slick, not bald. Bald is old and worn out.) Mike may have given you the best advice, however, go to a store and ride the bikes before you buy. Tlak to somebody there (hopefully sombody middle aged with a gut as opposed to some 19 year old that is stick thin) and get thier input on your situation. Rely on them. Don't forget that what feels most comfrotbale for 3 minutes in a parking lot will almost certainly not be what feels comfrotable for 1 hour or more on the road, so let them guide you and make sure it fits, as this will be very important to your enjoyment over time.

That location is right on my way home. Maybe I'll stop by there this evening.
And thanks to all for the input. Not trying to be a pest.

DO you have a beard and have you ever ridden your 'bent with 1) a wool jersey or 2) a seersucker shirt? I am not poking fun (not yet) but I am just curious. do you prefer the bent to the diamond frame?

I am clean-shaven I wear cotton t-shirt or maybe a polo/golf shirt, with regular shorts, while riding my bent. You didn't ask, but I am not overweight, OK maybe 10 lbs over ideal weight. I have more fun riding the bent than the diamond frame for exercise and just to relax ... for that reason it probably gets used 4x as much as the Trek. The Trek is better for getting from point A to point B if I want to carry something in a backpack, like for commuting, but I'm not regularly commuting now. The design of my bent, the CLWB, is not very good for hill climbing. So I wouldn't ride it on a very hilly route or up a mtn canyon -- at least I'd need to build my climbing muscles more. The long wheelbase models are a bit better for climbing. I don't do any competitive or group rides. |

FM you have until September 6th to get ready for Lotoja and here is what you do to get ready. Borg can take you through the Sawtooths in August, Pride will drag your ass around Utah lake the week before, Mike will join you for the Hotter then Hell 100, Goose will take you up where the eagles fly on his death ride, you could hang with Arch just about any weekend during the year and get in 250 miles, Bigpiney will take you for a ride and then expect you to go on a twenty mile run with him afterword. And then if you feel like your motivation is running low you just call Creek and he can tell you stories of riders like Herrera and Theunisse who were able to maintain their 125lb frame with thousands of miles on the road every year and how he's doing Lotoja in 2009.
A beautiful world is about to open up to you.

FM can take me in his RV to HHH, he will pay for the gas and I will buy him a hamburger after he finishes his 25mi and I finish my century at the same time.
Doing a metric century by August in 95+ heat would be a good goal. |
