The doctor's explanation of a pill in the throat reminds me of Dumbo's feather for some reason.

I scraped half my face off on the pavement in a bicycle accident - the pain from my face masked the pain from my broken finger for 3 days.
Do I win?

sorry about all that, BG. The pain is bad and all, but I'd prefer to use my energy complaining about how hard it is to get doctors to take you seriously when you know it's more than they think it is.

this is why you are better off, in a lot of cases, getting to know your PCP.
Random woman showing up to the ER asking for narcotics for an unusual subjective complaint in the middle of the night.......doctors are damned if they do, damned if they don't. |

My gyn has been my PCP for ten years. It takes several days to get in with her, so I didn't wait. She wouldn't have recognized this, either. The symptoms present as esophagitis caused by reflux, but it should be obvious to anyone that with my weight, diet, lifestyle, and medical history -- and with the fact that the ER's green sludge reflux treatment wasn't helping -- that I'm not a very likely candidate for GERD. But on the other hand, no one but a specialist is going to have any other suggestions. It was one of those situations where you could tell the doctors were frustrated, but they didn't know what else to say, and they didn't think inpatient admission was warranted. It was only the third doctor (seeing as how this was now my third trip to an emergency clinic in twenty-four hours, and that I was nearly hysterical by this point), who dismissed my complaints. |

"Doc, I'm in severe pain."
"Have you been taking anything for it?" "Tylenol, advil." "Your urine shows opiates." "Oh yeah, some of my husband's vicodin. He had some leftover." "Oh?" "Yeah, just a day's worth. I've run out now. I could really use some more. It helped a ton." "It did?" "Yeah. But it didn't feel like it was strong enough. You got anything stronger? When I was in really bad pain before, something, what was it, oxy-, oxy-cotton? That worked great." "It did?" "Yes." "How much do you weigh?" "90 pounds. I've been losing weight." "You don't say." "I try to gain weight, but I can't." "Really." "You're the third doctor in the last 24 hours that I've seen. The other two were garbage. I hope you can help." "Yeah, me too." .......etc. |

yeah, but it's hard getting to know your PCP when you're healthy. I've had the same PCP for like 8 years, and every time I go (say 4-5 times in those 8 years), she introduces herself like we've never met before. And I was talking less about trying to get drugs and more about trying to get them to help you figure our what's going on when they are dismissing it as nothing.
