why? they have already created the impression that it is appropriate to write the church president letters when things are occurring that shouldn't be so (e.g. Dear President Hinckley, my husband has a porn problem).

You're correct; they'd prefer problems to fester and for members to lose faith. Administrative integrity is more important than repentance, faith and baptism.

But the greatest of these is iconoclasm.

Do you think of Church leaders as icons?

Seriously, Indy, if it's okay to contact the prophet personally, why would they be concerned about having members contact their local leaders?

I haven't asked him, but I'm pretty sure Hinckley's reading of a letter is not intended as a tacit endorsement to write the GA's directly.

I'm quite surprised their not gods or demigods in Tex's eyes, incapable of error or mistake. We never should approach leaders with any concerns especially not in a tactful way, but we should brood upon their mistakes until it becomes so caustic that it burns holes in our faith which are inrreparable.

It's not just happened once, but dozens of times. "It was brought to my attention in a letter from a dear sister..."

If it were a practice completely disapproved, do you believe Tex and Indy, the President would do anything which might encourage it to happen more often?

No. And I don't believe Church leaders are icons.
