Horner's work on Field of Dreams. Man I love the original score for that. It gives me goosebumbs.

"Dad? Wanna have a catch?"

Cue music...instant eye wetness.

I also loved Alan Silvestri's score for Forrest Gump.

Danny Elfman writes my favorite scores.

My all time favorite opening music is the first few bars heard in Warriors with the Wonder Wheel at night and the subway train approaching.

James Horner's score from Apollo 13 is outstanding, especially as the launch is taking place.

Elmer Bernstein has some terrific scores, especially the theme from Stripes.

Absolutely. Excellent score. Unfortunately somewhat overshadowed by all the pop music clips, but outstanding composition.

I also love the soundtrack to Princess Bride. But I suppose that's a pretty girly movie to bring up.

I have several favorite scores:

Lots of Star Wars different tunes.

Back to the Future (laugh if you want but Alan Silvestri's score is very good)

The Raiders movies....more John Williams

Some of Danny Elfman's stuff, though like Jazz music, a lot of it sounds the same.

I love hearing the score song from The Natural after Roy Hobbs hits that Home Run and busts up the lights and in slow motion is shown rounding the bases while his teammates celebrates under the fireworks of the exploding bulbs...

Rocky orchestral music by Bill Conti.....everyone can identify with those opening trumpets....also the "Gonna Fly Now" stuff is great.

Not too girly, I love the Princess Bride and the soundtrack. I am also very very fond of the sound track from Pride and Prejudice -the piano piece is hauntingly beautiful.

Anyway...

While visiting my folks over the holidays my dad dug out "Dirty Harry." He was living in the bay area (Santa Clara, San Francisco, and Sunnyvale) during the Zodiac killings and was later trained at the police academy. He likes Clint Eastwood too, so this film is really a favorite of his. But that soundtrack is perfect! Just thinking about that spooky "Scorpio theme" makes chills run up my spine. The haunting wailing and the driving, predatory bass have the serial killer feel all over them. When I went to take the garbage to the street after dark (and after watching the film) that soundtrack was in my head and when I tripped the motion detector and the outside lights popped on I jumped a good two feet in the air and my heart was pounding. Sometimes it's fun to be scared.

Are there any original film scores that you really enjoy? I have lots of favorites, but would rather hear what you like.
Though I suppose O Brother Where Art Thou's sound track might better be compared to the pop music of today's soundtracks, it is my favorite element of the movie ... if I happen upon it while flipping channels I stop simply to listen for banjos!

Either you are listening to terrible jazz music, or you do not understand jazz music if you think it all sounds the same.
