try to buy insurance as an individual in the open market, esp. if you have any kind of health problems.
I just went to ehealthinsurance.com and entered in my family's info, and I got a quote for just south of $600 a month that would pretty much be the same as my current insurance. Of course, if I get my insurance through work, it's cheaper because my employer picks up part of the cost, and I am not taxed on that benefit. However, the person buying on the open market is using post-tax dollars if I'm not mistaken. Making it that even more expensive.
I know in my case the money I do put towards my insurance is pre-tax. So, perhaps it is pre-tax to the self-employed person as well. ???
