In the context, I assumed he was talking about us vs them, but your interpretation is poetic. I like it.

Although, he could have basically just generically referred to it as our Civil War, since Gettysburg was no more an example of internal division as any other battle during that war.

Maybe he should have referred to it as our Vietnam War.
