That is partly true. There is required pro bono work though. If you are admitted to practice law in certain courts the court will frequently assign you a case to handle on a pro bono basis. Free, no choice.

I don't mind, and I don't think it is that different from what Cardiac describes.

Civil courts? Then how come SU doesn't have a single pro bono case?

I don't know if SU has pro bono cases or not. If he is only admitted to practice in state courts, he may not be mandated to take pro bono cases. If you are admitted in federal courts, you frequently are assigned criminal cases as defense counsel, landlord-tenant disputes, etc.

Cali, SU, here's a suggestion the next time you need a pro bono case.

Defend a Gitmo terrorist. There's plenty to choose from, and they need your help against George Bush's evil plan to keep them there forever.
