This is why I love being a classicist. Word play is my game.
Morals, morality, and other such words stem from the Latin mos, moris, which means customs, habits, and general way of life. Thus, one's morals simply describe the way one conducts himself through life. Virtue stems from the word vir, which means "man," and virtus, virtutis, which means (amazingly enough) "strength," "power," or "manliness or excellence." A virtuous man is a manly man, who has all the characteristics that would define an excellent man-- cf. the greek arete, likewise translated as virtue or excellence.
