As well as a using the Book of Mormon in teaching courses on Mesoamerican history.

Religion rises inevitably from our apprehension of our own death. To give meaning to meaninglessness is the endless quest of all religion. When death becomes the center of our consciousness, then religion authentically begins. Of all religions that I know, the one that most vehemently and persuasively defies and denies the reality of death is the original Mormonism of the Prophet, Seer and Revelator, Joseph Smith.

I went to a public California high school. We read parts of the Bible in my AP World Lit class. Is that unusual? I figured most seniors did. Danimal said if his public Utah high school had included the Bible in its curriculum the ACLU would be on their tail in an instant.

That's so funny. The only thing I remember from my first Latin class is my teacher's (very) off-key rendition of Adeste Fidelis.

In AP English here we only read the passage about Abraham and Isaac, with my teacher insisting on the evil character of God and trying to unbrainwash those of us that had been raised in a church.

That's unusual. There's no way any of my high school classes would have read the Bible.

My friend ended up reading the bible on her own in college. She'd never been to church or read it at home, and was tired of not understanding all the references made to it in literature, history, or every day life. She approached it as literature. I think she got very bogged down in Psalms for some reason.

What? No "Frère Jacques?"

I remember my favorite phrase in 7th grade French was, "Comme-ci, comme ça." I used it for everything.

How are you doing today? - Comme-ci, comme ça
How was the dinner? - Comme-ci, comme ça
How is the weather? Comme-ci, comme ça
How is the search for the new Ute basketball coach going? - Comme-ci, comme ça

Mine were "Je n'comprends pas," and "Je n'sais pas." No matter what the teacher asked, I had an accurate response at the ready.

Have you ever been to Alabama? Lets just say I would not feel comfortable with my kids being taught that version of the bible. And I can assure you that the fine Christian people of Alabama would not want their kids anywhere near our interpretation of the bible.

This is of course the argument against school prayer as well. Some places prayer means shouting to "Father god" in a hand holding circle, with people saying amen, and raising their arms in supplication. In those places our tradition would get completely washed out.
