Dude, it was amazing. Vol 1 and 2.
KROQ used to be quite an influential radio station in the country...one of the biggest. Rodney has been credited for being the first US DJ to play load of bands....mostly punk stuff, but also the first DJ to play a lot of the new romantic 80s movement. The Vol 1 and 2 stuff had lots of punk...Adolescents, Agent Orange, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Social D, and even more radio friendly early new wave stuff. Do you remember the song "Are You Ready for the Sex Girls?" by Gleaming Spires? It was on there. For more traditional 80s alt, Jed the Fish, Poorman, and Richard Blade championed those bands. If you look at the liner notes of either Only a Lad or Good for Your SOul, the band thanks Jed the Fish for "strategic air support." Richard Blade is credited for being the first US DJ for playing Depeche Mode back in the early 80s. Stuff like that. KROQ was amazing at the time.

Gleaming Spires is a terrific band. Lewis and Gilbert just didn't know how good they had it.

When I went up to BYU for my freshman year, I was so happy that KJQ existed. It certainly was more than respectable. I was sad to see it go. It was replaced by some lame copy that never quite adopted the same format as KJ-Moo.

Bessie the Milk Truck was great. You're too young to know about KCGL. It was an upstart station out of Centerville that was very similar to KROQ in that it played the great early stuff of new wave, punk, etc. One of the DJs there was from Orange County and brought his personal collection to play on the air.

I got my first LP in January or so of 1964. I was in sixth grade and paid $3.98 for a new group my mom thought was subversive due to hair length. "Meet the Beatles."
I'm not sure of my first 45, but it may have been "Leader of the Laundromat", a parody of "Leader of the Pack." I'm embarrassed to know of both songs. |

Isn't X96 the former KJQ? If I remember correctly they simply changed their name when shifting frequencies from 93.3 to 96.1, keeping the same format and all of their DJs. The Morning From Hell show has had some hilarious moments.
