The guy was always getting his ass kicked by Perry Mason in the courtroom, yet he was never fired.
Was he married to the governor's sister or something?

Much worse than losing cases he kept prosecuting innocent women and men. That was inexcusable. He should have been fired.
On the other hand, you can't blame him for losing cases against innocent people.

The true story of the actor playing him is even more interesting. From IMdB: In March of 1960 Talman made headlines when he was arrested during a police raid of a supposedly "wild nude party" being held at the home of an acquaintance, Richard Reibold. The incident caused CBS to invoke a morals clause in his contract that cost him his job on "Perry Mason." The charges were eventually dropped after a trial that was closely followed by the newspapers and sensationalized by the tabloids. Talman always maintained his innocence, and following the trial the judge in the case criticized the police for arresting him. He remained off the show until December of 1960, when CBS reinstated him after a flood of fan mail from supporters. He was also the first actor to do anti-smoking ads for tv at a time when it was unpopular to do so because tobacco companies were big money sponsors of a lot of shows. I started this thread because I actually love this old show. It's one of the three reasons to watch KBYU: Perry Mason, The Andy Griffith Show and I Love Lucy one right after the other starting at 10:30 pm Mon-Fri. Good times.
