Social media banning certain users/groups
Reminds of the cougarboard vs. cougarguard debate. And this goes towards many online forums. What kind of behavior or posting is allowed. What is not. What is the obligation to open discourse and communication versus cultivating a kind of environment that is conducive to the aims of the owner.
They are not always easy questions. It's one thing if a podunk BYU website practices censorship. It's another if a flagship social media giant does. Obviously I came down more on the side of open expression than cougarboard did. But at the same time I felt lot of dissatisfaction about the direction of cougarguard, and that's what led to the migration out in large part. My dissatisfaction, my reactions and behavior, and of course other factors some of which I might know, but others which I probably have no idea about. Honestly don't care at this point. |
