LPHS coach leading candidate for BYU asst. coaching position
I think this would be a good hire. I knew him in high school because he was friends with my younger brother who has stayed in touch with him off and on through the years and seems to think pretty highly of him. I'm not much of a Dick Harmon fan, but I think he makes some interesting observations here about Lewis. This hire makes sense to me on several levels. He's a ridiculously successful HS coach, already has D1 assistant coaching experience, is extremely well connected with AAU and HS nationally as well as locally, so probably a great resource to add in the recruiting area.

If hiring him meant the difference in getting Jackson, he should be hired for that reason alone.

As far as I can tell, the assistant coaching position may be between Quincy Lews and Barret Peery. Peery was an assistant at Arizona State until this season when head coach Herb Sendek was fired. Previously he was wildly successful as a HC at the JC level in Arizona and at College of S. Idaho. He is also speculated to be a current candidate for an assistant job at Iowa State.
http://www.desmoinesregister.com/sto...dler/70730958/ Then there is this odd article I found about why Peery didn't get the SUU coaching job in 2012. Consider the source, of course (SUU News), but if what it's saying is true, you have to wonder what he did to freak out the SUU players when it seemed the job was all but his. But in his defense, SUU hasn't gotten any better since then when they hired the other guy. http://www.suunews.com/weblogs/monda...st-the-suu-jo/ So is Peery a great recruiter and "players coach" like Mark Pope reportedly was, or not? Is Quincy Lewis too hard-nosed and someone who would somehow disrupt staff chemistry who would favor his own guys? Big Daddy D on Cougarboard is supposed to be pretty well connected to the Utah HS basketball scene and has these observations: http://www.cougarboard.com/board/mes...ml?id=14011001 http://www.cougarboard.com/board/mes...ml?id=14011064 I also know Brendan Bailey (Thurl's son) recently decommited to ASU when they made the coaching change and has BYU back on his radar. Apparently it's debateable how good of a prospect he is, but the rumor is he really liked Peery. Some also believe Peery is the main reason Frank Jackson even has ASU on his list. Of course everyone could be totally wrong and Rose could surprise and hire someone off the radar. It seems Lewis' strength might be Xs and Os with Peery's being recruiting. That doesn't necessarily mean either would be bad at either. Last edited by BlueK; 04-27-2015 at 08:12 PM. |

Then there's this post about Peery, saying he's not really a candidate after all.

This is a good hire, I think. Lewis' teams play very good defense and I believe he's an excellent x's and o's guy. I knew him in HS and his dad coached the basketball team. From going to a couple of camps and trying out for the team (I didn't have the talent to make it, but it was a good experience). I came away appreciating how much his dad was into teaching the fundamentals. I assume Quincy is the same.

Interview with Quincy Lewis. Some good stuff here. I'm even more excited about this hire after listening to this. Also, has an interesting perspective on recruiting in general and on Lone Peak players going to BYU and how the so-called "pipeline" tarted.

Who knows. Could be Rose's successor at BYU.
