One thing I really like the WCC
is how we have to try and rise up to the level of a Gonzaga. That's a real challenge. And St. Mary's is no lightweight. Swept us this year. And now it's clear that the middle of the pack can beat BYU in a down year.
The thing about Gonzaga is they play big in big games. Road non-conference. Tourneys. Can Dave Rose actually climb this mountain and build a program that can match Gonzaga year in and year out? The thing that kills me about Rose this year, is that he never could find rotations. He was fiddling and messing with rotations up until the very last game. I don't think any of the non-stars were ever sure about their minutes or what they would be asked to do. Think how disruptive it is for example to suddenly bring in a football player in the middle of the season and give him relatively big minutes. Or the up and down with Carlino's minutes. Or how about Winder never really being allowed to make a significant contribution. At the end of the day, the coaching was a failure because Rose was unable to make this team better as the year went on. In fact, they become worse. The role players never played with confidence. He road his two horses too hard (Tyler Haws and Brandon Davies). Without significant improvement next season in the play and coaching, I think a lot of us are going to be doing some Laman/Lemuel-style murmuring. |

p.s. coach rose--you can't win without defense. You can't be uptempo if you have to take the ball out from under the basket because the other team is scoring every time.
