The Arizona immigration law
I'm still trying to wrap my head around this law. I see the points that both sides are making. I think civil liberties concerns are quite legitimate.
But regardless of whether it is the right move or not: one thing that this illustrates is that our federal system allows parts of our society to embark on a social experiment and see what happens as a result. We will actually get to see if the law actually has the outcome that the proponents and opponents say will occur. I mean, look at California, the rest of us are learning that you can't have unlimited spending and limited taxes, and be fiscally sound. Here in Texas, the effect of illegal immigration is very profound. If all the illegal immigrants left tomorrow, things would be quite different. Some things arguably better, some things arguably worse. But quite different. Gay marriage is another one. Will it have detrimental effects on marriage and families? Who knows. Guess parts of our country will find out. It's hard to imagine the John McCain of 2006 supporting this immigration law. Re-election is a b****. |

Goes up before the Supreme Court tomorrow. Quinnipiac says voters want the law upheld 62-27.

The AZ legislature is 35% Mormon and I think the bill's LDS sponsor Russell Pierce was booted in a recall. I can't believe AZ Mormons are producing this crap. Violates the Church's principles on immigration.

Just curious, how did you arrive at that figure?

Had a roommate who ran for Justice of Peace in Phoenix. He has legislatorial ambitions and he told me.

I think it's quite far off. I'd put money down that it's no more than half that.
