Chris Matthews blasting Palin tonight
I know, he's liberal. But he is correct about this. When Sarah Palin talks about the constitution being "flexible" about the role of the VP and that she'll assume a powerful role in the senate and in the administration, she is full of it. The constitution only says she casts the tie vote in the senate and takes over if the president dies. Any "conservative" who would argue otherwise is making the same kind of loose construction argument the "living constitution" folks try to make. Cheney set a bad precedent.

Just for reference, could you provide a link to the Palin quote that Matthews is taking exception with?

It should be apparent by now that Palin is not much of a conservative.
Here's the quote, Tex: Quote:

Q: Brandon Garcia wants to know, “What does the Vice President do?” PALIN: That’s something that Piper would ask me! … [T]hey’re in charge of the U.S. Senate so if they want to they can really get in there with the senators and make a lot of good policy changes that will make life better for Brandon and his family and his classroom. Pretty simple, Tex. Now tell me where expanded powers she's talking about fits into the text below. She has no policy making authority according to what I read. Maybe I'm an originalist and you're not.
This is all the Constitution says about the duties of the vice president: Article 1, section 3 The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no vote, unless they be equally divided. Amendment XXV Section 1. In case of the removal of the President from office or of his death or resignation, the Vice President shall become President. |
