Besides, one advantage the Bible has over the Book of Mormon is that we know from contemporary facts and hard archeological and linguistic and documentary evidence there were such things as Hebrews, Egyptians, Phillistines, etc., they fought one another, etc. At least we have that bare bones corroboration of the Bible's general context.

That stuff doesn't support Elder McConkie's book at all!

I'm going to expose my kids to the charlatans, and then call it like I see it. I'm not going to hide the world from them. |

Basically I agree with you. My last line was sort of a troll. It's possible and really necessary to enlighten your kids so that they will spot such charlatans as easily as you. In fact, if you don't succeed with them that far you're done anyway because they're going to get exposed to all kids of bad stuff.

My 11 year old doesn't live with me, but she has enough of her dad in her that we have frequently had to talk about the idea (mostly in the context of her mom) that just because you have the ability to out talk someone or win the argument doesn't mean that it is always a good idea to do so. The danger with her is not that some charlatan is going to win her over, the danger for her will be that she will take him apart on the spot and make a scene. I think it is important that my kids, within reason, get exposed to ideas that are wrong. I want them to learn to critically examine things. I also want them to learn that faith is what will sustain them through life, not proofs.
