Either/any. I'm aware of the changes McConkie was forced to adopt, but that's not what the folks in parents' ward really care about. I haven't gone to church there in years, but my dad tells me it's the name McConkie - not any particular tenet - that is so revered. I'm sure it's less so among the youngsters, but my parents go to church with a bunch of old-timers (including themselves).

The biggest current LDS pop culture stars seem to me to be as follows:
Gordon B. Hinkley (seems to be more dynamic and worldly-wise than his predecessors) Mitt Romney Boyd K. Packer The Huntsman Dynasty Orson Scott Card Orrin Hatch Jefe Larry Miller About Gladys Knight--She's undeniabley an icon in pop music history, but don't you think she's not closely enough associated with LDS culture per se to qualify as an LDS pop culture superstar?

Packer? Gimme a break. You must really hale from the Ozzy and Harriett crowd. I'm aware of nobody who idiolizes Elder Packer. They take note and some may agree, but he is not a pop star type persona. He has no strong personality. Gladys Knight is probably one of the few with popstar type persona for both in and without. Yet she is the only one to have developed it from without before she developed a cause celebre within.

I won't argue with you on that one, though. I can't help but be somewhat suspicious that Joseph Fielding Smith and Harold B. Lee, both of whom maintained that the priesthood ban would remain intact so long as they were alive, had two of the shortest tenures at the head of the church, while Spencer W. Kimball, who should have died well before the prior two, lived so long. Thin ice indeed. But interesting, nonetheless.

Boyd K. Packer? An LDS pop culture star? Now, that's funny.
