In the last night of Wagner's Ring tetrology (which strongly influenced Tolkein even though he never acknowledged it) traditionally many passionate Wagner fans show up the last night in Germanic barbarian costumes. Kind of like how Seahawk fans wear Shawn Alexander jerseys.

Seattle of course is a one horse town but its opera is outsized in reputation and quality as are its ballet and symphony. The new opera house and the symphy hall are world class which is always a sign of a cummunity's commitment to the arts. THe opera company's specialty is Wagner and it was one of the first to start doing the complete Ring regularly (every four years like the World cup) and people still fly here from all over the world to see it. There wasn't an empty seat in the house last night.
