What is his current audience?
At first, when he was on TV, he had some humorous jabs at the Clintons, but after a while, his routine grew stale. He was a great baseball announcer for the Royals for a while, as his voice is entertaining. Do people still listen much to him?

from what I can tell listening to him the other day, his audience is folks who think they are brighter than they really are, and enjoy railing on the "hit and run mainstream media."
There is no critical thinking. |

Has "talk radio" or "talk tv" ever been equated with critical thinking? You were expecting the Easter Bunny as well?

that's why I stopped listening to AM radio.
I mainly listen to NPR. Yes it probably has some liberal bias. But I hear all sorts of interesting things that have nothing to do with politics. I've had numerous conversations where a topic from NPR came up. |

NPR is the best thing on television, radio, or print.
AS for Rush, he is just helping the Republicans hurt themselves. If Hastert were smart he would immediately tell all that he knew, apologize, and move on. He is only going down if he can't change the subject. Heard a great line about Hastert by Craig Crawford. When asked if Hastert would be thrown under the bus, Crawford said, "If so it better have a high clearance." Mocking the physical characteristics of an elected representative is always a recipe for hilarity, IMO. |

That makes more sense.

I wonder if Rush is suspicious about the timing of falling gas prices. My guess is that he isn't.

That said, the guy is funny and in many cases insightful. He is entertaining and often self-depricating. No real mystery to me why he is popular. You don't have to like his politics to be entertained by him. I think he also has a particularly loyal following of conservatives who first became fans when he was the only person anywhere in the media expressing a conservative view point. Living in the age of Fox it is easy to forget that when he came to prominence in the early 90s he was unique. There was zero conservative commentary in the media and lots of conservative, not all of them just like him, gravitated to him. I think that those with an agenda to discredit him and the political movement that he is some ways represents will continue to scratch their heads over his popularity and assert that it is the stupidity of his unthinking fan base. I'm pretty sure that that is naive and also overlooks that he is popular for the same reason anyone in the media is: he entertains.
