But to your point, no. It was a functioning state that controlled it's territory. You might not have liked how they did it, but if that's our criteria for broke and fixed there's a whole lotta broke places out there.
And as '71 said, how is that relevant to the debate? My point is WE took a functioning nation-state and broke it. It's our job to undue the harm and make it work again. Hopefully as a functioning liberal democracy in the classic sense of the term.

Actually I think it was a secret communique to its lieutenants in Iraq that we intercepted. I don't have it in front of me, but I remember the language seemed to indicate that losing Iraq to America would be a critical blow.

And just for the record I was and still am not a supporter of our Iraq invasion. I thought it was a distraction from where the real action was and is. That being said I really do believe that it would speak very poorly of us as a nation and people if we left Iraq before it was once again a functioning nation-state. We made the problem, we are morally obligated to fix it.
