Default Community Interests vs Personal Freedom

Interesting article on the healthcare debate: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24670562/

In a nutshell, the Dem proposals involve sharing risk across broad pools, including both the healthy & less healthy. As participants who invest more than they receive, the healthy subsidize the sick.

McCain's proposal emphasizes personal freedom, as individuals would seek coverage on their own & be able to choose from competing insurance offerings. Insurance companies would see less regulation, which (presumably) would lead to better insurance "products". Based on pre-existing conditions and/or factors identifed in pre-coverage exams, those who are less healthy would see their premiums skyrocket as the insurance companies mitigate their financial risk.

Community Shared Values vs Personal Freedom, the classic dichotomy between left & right.

Other examples - car insurance, public education (I tried to be fair, honest)
